SACJTC Board Members



Sheryl Smith Kappus, Ph.D. serves as the fourteenth president of Hill College, the first female president. Hill College is a residential community college founded in 1923 currently with five locations in Central Texas serving over 7,000 students annually.

Before joining Hill College in 2004, Dr. Kappus' career was spent in community college education as well as scientific medical research. She began her career at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where she served for thirteen years. There she co-authored more than twenty scientific publications in the areas of microbiological research.

Dr. Kappus was a founding faculty member of the Collin County Community College District (Texas) in 1986. While with CCCCD, she served as Dean of Science and Health, Dean of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Dr. Kappus currently serves on the Texas Association of Community Colleges Executive Committee as the Elected Representative for the Central Region Colleges as well as on the TACC Legislative Committee. Dr. Kappus also serves on numerous civic and public boards; Cleburne Chamber of Commerce Board, Cleburne Economic Development Board, Tuesday Forum, Hillsboro Planning Team, Bill J. Priest Board, and North Texas Community College Consortium. She is the recipient of numerous local, state, and national awards, but has recently received several local recognitions of great meaning to her including a scholarship named in her honor, the Dr. Sheryl Kappus Rotary Scholarship, and the Cleburne Rotary Leadership Award 2005.

Dr. Kappus is a member of the editorial board of the prestigious journal, Community College Review.
